Riordan proudly continues as major sponsor of the Riordan Wycheproof King of the Mountain, supporting a day that brings families and visitors together and delivers real benefits to the region.
Held each year in Wycheproof on AFL Grand Final Day (Saturday 26 September 2026), King of the Mountain has re-established its place on the local calendar, combining the iconic race with a family-friendly day of sport, food, and entertainment.
In the signature race, competitors carry a bag of wheat up Mount Wycheproof — 60kg for men and 20kg for women. There are also wheelbarrow races, running events and junior races, giving people of different ages and abilities the chance to get involved.
Away from the racing, set up in the town’s Centenary Park, the day includes food and drink trucks, children’s activities and the AFL Grand Final shown live on the big screen, creating a relaxed festival atmosphere for families and visitors.
The event is coordinated by the Calder United Lions Football, Netball and Hockey Club (CULFNHC), whose President, Ricky Allan, said the benefits to the community extend well beyond race day. “King of the Mountain is a unique and special event that has brought a real buzz back to Wycheproof, a huge bonus for a small country town. The festival attracts visitors to the region and provides a welcome boost for local businesses.”
“It is an extremely family-friendly day, with something for everyone. People of all ages can take on a challenge, be active and, most importantly, have fun,” Ricky Allan said.
Riordan Managing Director Jim Riordan said,“Taking on the challenge of the race is a great achievement for every competitor and reflects the strength and resilience we see in country people every day.
“We are thrilled that King of the Mountain is once again becoming a signature attraction for the region. There has been an enormous combined effort to bring it back, and it shows what can be achieved when people work together to achieve a goal, and we’re very proud to be a part of it.
For Riordan, working alongside our regional communities for more than 60 years, the partnership reflects an ongoing commitment to supporting our people, customers, and businesses.”
